What To Look For When Evaluating A CMS Solution

If your company is looking to purchase a Content Management Solution (CMS), there are several things to consider when evaluating Content Management Software.

1. Investigate the infrastructure

If you can find a CMS solution that works on the same platform and is written in the same programming language as your web site then it will be easier to integrate and your total cost of ownership will be lower.

2. Investigate the output of the CMS

Does the CMS limit you to certain "generic" templates or looks? Is your companies web site image important?

3. Ask Your Peers

Ask your peers or competitors what kind of Content Management System they use and are they happy with it. You can also approach companies who's web sites you like and ask them what CMS system they are using. Be sure to ask whether the CMS truly makes their web site more efficient, easy for anyone to updated etc...

4. Training & Support

You'll want to make sure that your CMS provider will provide the necessary training to get your team up to speed quickly. This training and all user manuals and FAQ type information should all be included as part of your package. Also make sure that the company has good telephone support available, even better is 24 hour emergency support.

5. Check Solvency

You'll want to check that the CMS providers is solvent. It will do you no good to buy a CMS solution from a company that may not be around in a couple years (or months).

6. Upgrades

As with most applications there are bugs and security problems, these are usually applied to the application as a patch or upgrade. Make sure you find out if patches and/or upgrades and included in the price or do they cost extra. You'll also want to consider if the upgrades can you done by your staff or if they need to be done by the CMS service provider.

7. Performance & Reliability

You'll also want to check if the CMS provider provides you with a reliability and/or performance guarantee. What good is an expensive CMS if it is always crashing or if it operates slower than molasses.

8. Partial or Total

Decide if you want a part or a total CMS solution. You may not need a total CMS solution if you just want manage a small part of your web site such as say the news or articles... why buy more than you need... if the CMS solution is modular based and can grow with you as you want more features that even better.
